Biography

Willard C. Marshall was born on August 20,1903 in Galesburg, Illinois, and moved to Oregon with his family in 1907. He attended primary and secondary schools in both Portland and Salem, graduating first from Salem High School in 1920 and then from the University of Oregon in 1925. He was employed at numerous positions, for many different businesses including: account executive for an advertising company, Manager of Physicians and Surgeons Hospital Association, the co-founder and General Manager of Oregon Physicians' Service, Managing Partner for the Gideon Stolz Company, and Operator of Marshall Farms, to name a few. Most of these jobs were in Portland or Salem.

Marshall served as president of the Salem Art Association (1952) and of the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce (1960-61). In 1961 he became a member of the Salem City Council. He held that post until he was elected the mayor of Salem in 1963 and served until 1965, during which time he helped create a sister city relationship with Salem, India. In 1965, Marshall was selected First Citizen for Salem. He volunteered for many other organizations.

He stayed active until his death in August of 1968, leaving behind his wife, Margaret (whom he had been married to for forty years), and two daughters, Mrs. Martha Evanson and Mrs. Julia Sanderson.

General Description: The collection includes two boxes of personal papers, newspaper clippings and memorabilia. The Society also has slides Marshall took of his travels.
