1900 'Rithmetic Questions

The following questions are taken from A Practical Arithmetic by G.A. Wentworth, which was a math textbook in 1900.

1. The sugar contained in the sugar beet is 6 ¼ percent of the weight of the beet. How many pounds of sugar will be obtained from an acre of beets, if it produces 400 bushels? Answers

2. The weight of ashes obtained from burning dry white oak wood is 2 ¾ percent of the weight of the wood. A cubic foot of dry white oak weighs 52 pounds. Find the weight of ashes obtained from burning a cord of dry white oak. Answers

3. A tailor bought four pieces of cloth of equal lengths at $2.50 a yard. He sold three of the pieces for $405, and gained $67.50 on the three pieces together. How many yards were there in each piece? Answers

4. If 97 bushels and 12 quarts of wheat are raised from seven acres and 40 square rods of land, what is the average yield per acre? Answers

5. If a wood chopper cuts 15 ¾ cords of wood in nine days, how many cords does he cut on the average each day? Answers

6. Find the least number of dollars which, if divided into 18, 24 or 30 equal parts, will give $17 remainder in each case. Answers

7. A commission of $50 was charged for selling $2,000 worth of goods. Find the rate of commission. Answers

8. A man paid $25 for having his house insured for three years at 1 ¼ percent on 2/3 of its value. Find the value of the house. Answers

9. If 6/7 percent of a number exceeds 4/5 percent of the number by 200, what is the number? Answers
