School funding is an issue we have all faced in one form or another, and our educational programs have suffered. Because of cuts in funding schools have less money for extra programs. Even our low cost of $45 is beyond many schools. Every teacher is making their few dollars stretch. One of our missions is education, a mission our membership has supported so well in the past. You can be a part of the solution to the funding problems by sponsoring our programs in schools. Each sponsored class allows another group of children to have a unique educational opportunity. We are hoping to have money available for the 2008-2009 school year. That includes the 150th Anniversary of Oregon's Statehood. This is an excellent time to introduce history in the schools. Our current programs include "A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words; The Stories Photographs Can Tell" and "History According to Whom? Primary versus Secondary Sources." We also have a series based on aspects of life approximately 100 years ago such as play, schools and homes. Our programs are interactive, engaging and thoroughly researched. We help connect historical investigation to skills used throughout life and base our lessons on Oregon State Standards and goals. We are including a sponsorship form in this newsletter and hope this makes it easy to support our efforts. The Society is committed to education and helping all children discover the stories history can tell and the lessons we all need to remember. Please consider how a sponsorship helps us to honor this commitment. THE OREGON ENCYCLOPEDIADo you have an Oregon story to tell? Check out www.oregonencyclopedia.org .
