Library

The Marion County Historical Society has recently created a spacious new research library to increase public access to its library and archival collections. The library provides students, genealogists and local historians a variety of research materials documenting Marion County history. These materials include: biographical files, subject files, city directories, maps, books, local publications, photographs and other historical documentation which must be used onsite. Members of the Historical Society may use the library and archive at no charge. There is a research fee for non-members.

Archives

Complementing its collection of books and other published works on Marion County history, the Marion County Historical Society also collects manuscript materials such as letters, photographs, diaries, minutes and other original documents. Manuscripts created by individuals and family members are typically referred to as "personal papers." Records created by groups, businesses and institutions are general known as "organizational records."

When these types of materials are donated to the Historical Society they need to be organized, inventoried and placed in acid-free folders to make them available to researchers. The Marion County Historical Society is currently working to make all its collections of personal papers and organizational records available to researchers.

Photographs

Along with preserving the written and printed materials of the past, the Marion County Historical Society also has a significant collection of photographs. This wide-ranging collection, including family snapshots, professional portraits and scenic views, records life in the county from the 1860s to the present. Reproductions from the collection may be purchased for research, publications and exhibits by contacting the Historical Society at 503-364-2128.
